XR FAMILY
The aim of this project was to redesign an x ray machine, that could be declined in multiple variations, which differ for dimension and functions. However, they are united by a common color range and aesthetic performance and characterized by an industrial look.
X ray machines could have different and multiple functions. The various dimensions and technical characteristics (such the internal space reserved for electrical equipment) depend on the type of product they have to scan through the conveyor belt (e.g. more commonly suitcases, up to very bulky items such as hold luggage in airport environments, freight forwarders, etc.)
The Concept and Ideas
As first step, the idea was to create the outer shell of the machine, which had to be as rounded as possible, in order to contrast the already necessarily squared shape of the original design.
Considering the airport environment in which the machine is used, the aim is to make the security area in the airport less aseptic, giving a sense of relax.
The First Proposal
The initial idea was declined in a concept that has, as its fundamental points, the use of a clear, peaceful color range, which gives a sense of safety to those who use the machine, like maintainers, buyers, etc.
The body of the machine is characterized by three main components: the two lateral ones made of white painted steel with vertical ribs to give strenght to the structure; and the central blue painted part that is composed by two steel plates that could be removed for maintainance.
The Second and Final Proposal
Since the first design proposal had clear problems related to the realization of the components, to the type of production process and to the too rounded shapes, the project was resized and adapted to more squared volumes.
Industrial and Hangar Design
The sphere of purely industrial design, to which the machine is inspired, is characterized by visible screws and visible mechanical components, by the rendering of the raw and rough material (troweled) and finally by dark colors, related to the world of the hangar design.
Family Feeling
The design feeling is represented by the use of colors, materials and finishes, which are common to all machines. The feeling of a solid base is held constant, a base with rounded edges that supports the scanner tunnel and the conveyor belt. The tunnel is composed of punched modular panels and the pattern is always the same size in all machines. The similarity of the size and shape of the LED with the punched pattern gives greater formal consistency in the single product and in the entire family. The verticality is also given by the raising of the structure: in fact the electric generator was moved above the scanner. For this reason, the LED was positioned higher in order to be visible at 360 degrees.
