SUPERMARKET PACKAGING
The project has, as its goal, the realization of a microwave cardboard box of 3 mm thick for transporting packs of pasta of various brands on the Italian market nowadays. Starting from this assumption, the project started focusing on the design of a box that could be obtained from a single sheet of cardboard, optimizing the use of material and reducing the cost of production.
Concept and Sketches
Different version of the box were discussed and analysed, and in the end only one of the concept proposed was developed. The peculiarities that characterize it are the savings in terms of cost, the ease of processing and production process time.
The Mokup
To create the mokup, the work started from single concepts in paper and then move to scale concepts always made of thin cardboard to better understand the problems of the box and to correct them easily. Once the shape and size of the model were clear, a template was realized. It allowed to create a preliminary model that highlighted some malfunctions, especially in the system closing.
3D Model
The concept model is quick and intuitive to assemble: the box is assembled simply by closing on itself the carboard template and gluing the side flaps. The box is durable and due to this fact it can be stacked on the top of each other without problems. At the same time the food content of the cardboard box is visible from outside and protected.
The Physical Model and the Graphic layout
The latter problems linked to shape and size have also been solved and the technical drawings, from which the final template was obtained, were created. This template was used to make the final physical model, made of 3 mm microwave cardboard.
Here the open and closed configurations are presented.
The graphics of the box was inspired to the iconography created by Erberto Carboni for food packaging between the 1950s and 1960s. It was readapted to a more contemporary and in line language with the new graphics that characterize the new blue packaging.
